Voces en el Polvo- Voices in the Dust
November 10, 2012

Voces en el Polovo- Voices in the Dust is a new multi-media chamber opera, by Bruno Louchouarn, with libretto by Juan Felipe Herrera, set against the backdrop of the September 1985 Mexico City 8.0 earthquake, and tells the story of a symbolic love and a people who survive through persistence and hope against all odds.

VOICES IN THE DUST is a project of Pasadena Arts Council's EMERGE Fiscal Sponsorship Program.

The opera follows the tenuous but profound connection--through a walkie-talkie--between a rescue worker and a medical student trapped for a week under the rubble of the “Hospital General.” Interleaved with this central story is the larger relationship of the people of Mexico City to hope, life and the afterlife and the larger drama of spontaneous solidarity and unrelenting humanitarian efforts achieved by them, together with international rescue volunteers, to overcome the chaotic and dominating forces acting upon them.

Written for soprano, tenor, mezzo-soprano, piano and electronics, it will be performed in English, Spanish, French, and, for the choruses of the international rescue volunteers, in several other languages.
