The unforgettable music and story of the Nat King Cole Trio.

by Scott Yanow

At Vitello’s, pianist Peter Smith put on a well-conceived tribute to the Nat King Cole Trio. His group with guitarist John Storie and bassist Alex Frank perfectly fit the style. Alternating instrumentals and vocal pieces, Smith told stories about Nat Cole’s life between songs. With Storie and Frank contributing background vocals along with fine solos, Smith had the ideal group in which to recreate the magic of Cole’s trio. Among the pieces that they performed were “Tea For Two,” “How About You” (showing how Cole was an influence on Oscar Peterson), “Call the Police,” “Gone With The Draft,” “Stop The Red Light’s On,” “When I Take My Sugar To Tea” and “I’ll String Along with You.” Whether singing, taking piano or relating the colorful stories, Peter Smith did a perfect job of paying tribute to Nat King Cole.
