The CJS Quintet
Feeling the Beat with Chuck Johnson and Friends
May 21, 2016

Boston Court's Fall Music Series generously sponsored by Elaine Kramer and Al Latham.

Boston Court's Fall Music Series is made possible in part by the Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission and the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division.

Saxophonist Johnson’s hard-driving bebop style and soulful blues are an essential of the L.A. jazz scene.

This performance will be spotlighting jazz artists with a strong historical connection with our Los Angeles jazz scene.  The program will be chosen from the songbooks of these super jazz giants: Horace Silver, Dexter Gordon, Art Farmer, Joe LaBarbera, Art Hillery, Harold Land and others.

CJS Quintet is recognized for bringing back the soul that is missing in much of today's modern mainstream material. Winners of the Chuck Niles Jazz Music Award, CJS Quintet synthesizes the hardbop east coast aesthetic with their unique west coast musical experiences to create a distinctive voice: a cohesive and unyielding approach that spins heartfelt tales with passion. The five artists come together to give listeners their joy in performing a melting pot of classic jazz while striving always to uplift the human spirit. Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times, describes the CJSQ sound as: "Hard driving
bebop...leavened with soulful blues."
